The first written record of the village of Poproč comes from 1255 and its earliest history is closely connected to the Jasov Premonstratesian canonical priory. Due to its favorable position in the southeastern part of the Slovenské Rudohorie ore mountains, it was predestined to ore mining, thus bringing the village prosperity for centuries. Apart from mining, the inhabitants were also farmers, forest workers, shepherds, coal makers and craftsmen. Although the mining industry became history, the village has been developing, growing and modernizing throughout its 754 year-old history. There have been several rapid leaps in terms of population during individual periods of its development, at present it has a population of 2743 inhabitants, mostly of Slovak nationality and belonging into the Roman-Catholic Church. There are several important historical monuments in the village, such as the Roman Catholic Kostol Všetkých Svätých (All Saints Church) built in 1766, Kaplnka Ružencovej Panny Márie (Chapel of the Virgin Mary, our Lady of the Rosary) and a stone chapel, which is proposed to be included into the list of Protected Cultural Mining Objects Successful development of the village suggests education of its citizens. Poproč provides its inhabitants with pre-primary education, primary and lower secondary education; it educates children from 2 years of age up to primary education in the kindergarten and primary school. The school also has a canteen and a large well-equipped gymnasium. Inhabitants of all ages can come and play several sports, such as football, table tennis or aerobic. The seniors are also taken care of, the municipality started to operate a retirement home 10 years ago. There is also a second, smaller one in the village - Domov svätej Anny retirement home and social services, operated by a non-profit organization. All citizens can use the health centre with a general practitioner, dentist, and a rehabilitation centre, as well as a home care service agency. The village has its own football pitch and a training pitch which has been used for 50 years by several generations of football players, and a new multi-purpose pitch. Another one is about to be constructed on the next to the primary school. Many shops and restaurants can be found in the village as well as a patisserie and a port office. Cultural events are organized mostly by the community centre. In the community centre building one can also find a library equipped by computers with internet access and Matica’s museum. The building is also used by the “Fortuna” singing group as well as “Popročanka” brass band. The Volunteer Fire Department is starting its activity anew in the village and the “Rotary klub Košice-Country” has its seat here as well.
